Gas Mileage

We purchased our Palisade in Medford. Oregon. We drove to Redding, CA which is about 150 miles. When we left Medford we had it in Comfort at the suggestion of the salesman. About halfway we were only getting 17.5 mpg so I switched it to ECO and it immediately started climbing. When we got to Redding it was 23.9 with it rated at 24 highway for the AWD. We filled up in Redding left it in ECO and drove home to Concord, CA about 210 miles. When we drove into our driveway we were at exactly 28mpg. So it is ECO for me. Not looking for sport driving but I am thrilled with the mileage.
I did not drive long enough in Comfort and besides that it was a winter pass that had been closed the night before so I was being careful. Again, I think the only way to find out is to try each method for yourself and decide. I have found no power problems with passing on the freeway or getting up to speed on the freeway. I have not yet tried to pass another car on a two lane road with oncoming traffic in the distance to get a feel for that. I am pretty much going for the best mileage anyway. Speed doesn't matter to me. When in the mountains I know mileage will decrease with uphill driving but love doing it so then gas mileage does not matter to me.

Just took a road trip to CA and back about 1900 miles each way Limited AWD in comfort mode about 25 mpg when the wind wasnt pushing against us all in all was very happy with the gas mileage. I tried using eco and it didnt seem to do much better keep in mind we were driving 70-85 mph depending on the speed limit.
I am wondering if when in eco mode does it cut power to the AC and other components? As this can actually shorten the life span of the components does anyone know what the eco mode does and how it affects like your components that are given less power for that mode?

If you're driving 70-85mph, you're on a highway/freeway, meaning you're cruising at a steady speed for long distances. No stop & go and/or need for acceleration. So the gearbox is already in its highest gear. It's to be expected that Eco mode isn't going to do much better than that.
You use more gas when you accelerate than when you're at a steady speed. That's why highway mpg is always higher than city mpg. In the city, you need power often to get going again (red lights, stop signs, traffic... etc.). That's when Eco will help you, at the expense of performance.

One of the instrument cluster display options shows what mode you are in (at least it does on the Limited). If in Smart mode, the display shows you mostly going between Eco and Comfort. Sport mode, IMHO, really changes the car's character. Much quicker response and perhaps better steering feel. If I wasn't worried about mileage and pollution I would stay in Sport all the time.
